Risk of Fire in Diesel Engine Vehicles Modified to Use LPG

The government is carrying out a project to convert diesel vehicles that exceed emission standards to low emission liquified petroleum gas (LPG) engines. However, concerns have been raised that fires occur, the engines easily overheat, and high speeds are not possible in the modified vehicles. Therefore, we tested vehicles (gasoline, diesel, LPG, and modified LPG) under idling conditions. We confirmed that the LPG-modified vehicle has a higher exhaust gas temperature than the other vehicles (gasoline, diesel, and LPG) and increased risk of fire. This is because LPG results in a higher combustion chamber temperature compared to those of the other fuels, and there is a problem of inconsistency between the parts because of the boring and modification of the cylinder head of used diesel engines that are required when replacement with a new LPG engine is not carried out. Therefore, rather than retrofitting a diesel engine with an LPG engine or the early disposal of old diesel vehicles, it is appropriate to add an exhaust gas abatement device and keep these vehicles in use.

정부에서 배출가스 허용기준을 초과한 특정 경유차에 대하여 저공해 LPG엔진으로 개조하는 사업을 시행하던 중 일부 차량에서 화재가 발생하였고, 엔진이 쉽게 과열되고 고속주행이 되지 않는다는 소비자 불만이 제기되었다. 이에 차량(디젤, LPG개조, 가솔린, LPG) 공회전 실험을 한 바, LPG개조차량이 타 차량(휘발유, 경유, LPG)에 비해 배기장치 온도가 높아, 화재위험성이 높아지는 것으로 확인되었다. 이는 LPG가 다른 연료에 비해 연소실 온도가 높은데, 새 LPG엔진으로 교체하지 않고, 중고 디젤엔진의 실린더헤드만 보링, 개조로 인한 부품간 부조화 문제인 것이다. 이에 디젤엔진을 LPG엔진으로 개조보다는 배출가스 저감장치 부착과 노후 경유 차량 조기폐차 유도 쪽으로 추진하는 것이 적절하다고 본다.
